COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A hotel linked to a child prostitution investigation is taking steps to prevent illegal activity in the future.
Police said Trevor Baker, 20, was caught pimping a 16-year-old girl and an 19-year-old girl at the Travel Lodge near 26th and Cimarron streets earlier this month.
On Tuesday, management at the Travel Lodge held a mandatory meeting for employees to hear a presentation from the Human Trafficking Task Force of Southern Colorado.
"We're going to talk about human trafficking on a very big scale, and then we're going to take it all down the way down to what happened here at the hotel," Task Force chair Aubrey Terry told workers. "Prostitution is human trafficking."
Some at the meeting said they had seen Baker with the two teens.
"They were very quiet and they were very nice people," said hotel manager Candy Cooley. "I mean, I checked Trevor Baker in myself once, and he really never gave any indication the situation was happening."
Employees learned about the warning signs for prostitution at the meeting, and now realize there were some red flags.
"He was a young man paying cash and had a girl coming in his room," said Cooley.
Cooley said hotel workers are now paying much closer attention to their guests.
"As far as checking IDs for all the adults in the room and just really watching for local activity in and out of the hotel," Cooley said.
Terry told employees to watch for guests without any luggage and suggested workers mention the security cameras placed throughout the building for guests' safety. She emphasized that prostitutes are almost always victims.
"They are victims because there's coercion, there's force, there's fraud connected to almost all of these stories," said Terry. "Of all the women I've worked with and the stories that I've heard, I've yet to meet a woman who woke up one day and said, 'I want to be a prostitute, I want to sell my body.'"
Terry said the Baker case is by no means an isolated incident in Southern Colorado. She said she's now working with two other teen girls who were also being prostituted in the Springs.
Terry said she contacted the Travel Lodge about having a presentation after the business was named in Baker's arrest affidavit. Police said Baker also prostituted the 16-year-old girl at The La Fon Motel in Manitou Springs. Terry said she contacted the motel several times, but has not heard back.
