Human remains found in storage tote inside Trinidad apartment

TRINIDAD, Colo. - An investigation is underway after Trinidad police officers searched a home and found human remains inside a plastic storage tote.

Police said in a news release that officers searched a home in the 400 block of North Avenue in relation to child sex crimes, but they stopped when they found the remains. The remains couldn't be identified due to their condition.

Investigators confirmed 40-year-old Cameron McCann has been arrested and charged with internet crimes against children.

McCann is being held without bail at the Las Animas County Jail.

Trinidad Police Chief Charles Glorioso would not confirm whether McCann is involved in with the body.

"This caught us by surprise, this is not what we expected going in and when we found the body, we had to pull out and get another search warrant," said Glorioso.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation and is working to identify the remains. Police say an autopsy is expected soon.

Trinidad police said an investigation into "both" crimes is ongoing. Details of the child sex crimes originally being investigated weren't released.

KRDO will update this article when more information is available.
