Lawyers: Police wouldn't let us talk Holmes

CENTENNIAL, Colo. -

Defense attorneys say police refused to let them speak to James Holmes for several hours after his arrest and that they ignored a demand not to question the Colorado theater shooting suspect.

Detective Craig Appel testified at a pretrial hearing Thursday that he knew two lawyers wanted to see Holmes.

Appel says he told one he would have to wait until Holmes was transferred to another jail.

The other attorney said she told Appel investigators couldn't talk to Holmes about explosives found in his apartment. They went ahead and questioned him anyway with no lawyer present.

Appel's testimony came during a day of dramatic and often testy exchanges between lawyers and witnesses as the defense sought to bar trial testimony about statements Holmes made to police.
