A physician with a need to help

Helping thousands at Fort Carson

Wear Red Friday Hero: Dr. David Harclerode

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - If you wade into a sea of fatigues at Fort Carson, you'd probably see him.   He is Dr. David Harclerode.  Dr. "H" is the medical director at the Soldier Readiness Processing Center.  He helps thousands of troops get ready for deployment or return from it, "I feel good about what I do.  If I can do anything to help these soldiers emotionally, it makes me feel good.  I live my dream job now."

Dr. Harclerode was in family medicine for 21 years before coming to Fort Carson and his current job in November of 2005.  He told me about a soldier who touched his heart.  Dr. "H" said, "I had a soldier four years ago who was hit in the head with a bullet, went to Walter Reed and had to have part of his skull, replaced.  It became infected, they had to remove it and the soldier came to Fort Carson for six months of treatment until he could go back to Walter Reed for more help.  He had the greatest family and family support.  He was a real neat fellow."

Dr. Harclerode was nominated as a Wear Red Friday Hero.  I asked him if he thought was a hero.  He told me, "I'm not a hero.  The heroes are the ones we take care of every day.  I appreciate everything they do for me and our country."

You can nominate your own Wear Red Friday Hero.  Go to our front page, scroll down the right side to the nomination form.  We have previous stories on there, too.   I look forward to reading your nomination.
