COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Revitalizing the Academy Boulevard corridor has been an uphill battle for Colorado Springs. A new report shows progress has been made, but more work is left to be done.
For rent, for lease, and out of business signs line parts of Academy Boulevard. That is what Colorado Springs is working to change. City Council heard from the team trying to make it happen.
"There are some great highlights, some good things that have happened in that area, and there are some areas that we've identified that still need some work or have gone in the wrong direction," City Council member Jan Martin said of the report.
Academy was once a powerhouse for businesses. The problem now is older shopping centers. They are emptying out and new businesses don't want to take over.
According to the Great Streets plan it is difficult for those areas to compete with new power centers along the Powers Boulevard and the north part of the city.
There has been some new construction and renovations along Academy Boulevard.
The group says it will continue to track the progress.
