Arrest made in 1996 sexual assault

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Police say a man who was already in prison has been linked to a sexual assault that happened nearly two decades ago.

Police say DNA linked Armando Lee Trujillo to the crime. Trujillo was behind bars at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex for a different crime. He's facing new charges related to a sexual assault that happened in 1996.

Police say that on Oct. 29, 1996, a 16-year-old girl was found naked and unresponsive in an alley near the 1700 block of West Vermijo Street after neighbors reported hearing screams and called 911.

Investigators learned the victim was sexually assaulted, and collected DNA.

In April of 2012, Springs police were notified by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation that the DNA collected at the time of the crime matched the DNA of someone in their system.

Additional testing was done, and the results confirmed that the DNA collected at the time of the crime matched Trujillo's DNA.
