FOUNTAIN, Colo. - A Fountain family is devastated after a home break-in last Tuesday.
The thieves stole irreplaceable items, including the ashes of a family member.
"My husband's father passed away and he had a cross locket that had a little bit of his ashes in it. That means so much and he doesn't have very much of his dad to remember," said Stephanie Fisher.
Fisher said she left her home around 9:20 a.m. and returned around 2 p.m.
"The first thing I noticed when we got home was my dog was outside and I had left her in the garage," said Fisher.
The balcony door to her bedroom upstairs was also wide open and has previously been shut, said Fisher.
"It was surreal. It was like a denial thing too, because this has never happened to me. I've lived in Colorado Springs since 1988," she said.
Her living room, kitchen and master bedroom had been ransacked.
"Our upstairs was completely trashed. Our gun safe was broken into and three weapons were stolen," said Fisher.
The crooks also stole jewelry, cameras and a laptop.
"So many years worth of pictures. I care more about the pictures than anything else. You can have my rings, diamond bracelet, but give me back my pictures and my husband's father's ashes," she said.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating the burglary.
Fisher said deputies were able to get a tire mark and shoeprint from her home.
A nearby neighbor also told her two men came to her door that same morning asking for a man named Jim who was selling a truck.
The Sheriff's Office said that often thieves will go to the front door to see if anyone is home. If someone answers, the thieves come up with an excuse as to why they are there. If this happens to you, take down the person's description and vehicle information, just in case.
It's also important to take inventory of valuables, including a written log and photographs, according to the Sheriff's Office. If law enforcement comes across stolen goods, they are able to return them to the rightful owners. Inventory also helps with homeowner's or renter's insurance.
