Attempted kidnapping concerns parents for childrens' safety

Attempted Kidnapping in Security

SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo. - It was a close call for a nine-year old boy on his way to school. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says two men tried to kidnap him Monday morning.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. near Venetucci Elementary School in Security around Willis Street and Goret Street.

"It makes me a little bit nervous. My children walk home from school every day," said parent Kathy Brown.

Brown has a nine-year-old son at Venetucci. One of his classmates got too close to strangers.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says the nine-year-old student was walking to school when the passenger tried to grab the boy through the window, but the boy ran away.

"His parents must have taught him something really well for him to be able to get away," said Brown.

Kate Scott's daughter also walks to school. She's shocked that something like this would happen in her neighborhood.

"I mean it's a pretty safe place to live. Like I could leave my door unlocked and it would be fine," said Scott. "That the kids won't feel safe and that's so wrong that they can't just step outside of their house and feel that way."

The Sheriff's Office wants kids to be aware of their surroundings - and pay close attention.

"We see so many kids these days that walk around with their faces buried in their phones, wearing headphones. It's hard for us to say anything to them when the cars get very close to them," said Sgt. Gregory White.

School District 3 says its increasing security during this last week of school.

The Sheriff's Office says the boy described the driver as a bald, white man in his 20's, wearing sunglasses and a grey t-shirt driving a red car. The passenger was a man in his 30's with a buzz cut. If you have any information, call the Sheriff's Office at 719-390-5555.
