COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - Southern Colorado with a special link to the President's Inauguration on Monday in Washington. 12 dancers with the Ballet Folklorico De La Raza will perform during the parade. These young women and men are ages six to 32 years old.
Troupe organizer, Connie Benavidez tells me she got the call just before Christmas that Inaugural organizers wanted her group to perform, "Why us? You've got two hours to make a decision so we can start the paperwork. I was afraid at first. I thought I'm too old to do trips like this, but now I'm ready for it." Connie still doesn't know who nominated her group for this honor but she is grateful to that person.
22 year old Alyssia Sanchez is one of the dancers. She is psyched to go, "To be able to share my culture with everybody and show them different dances that we do is a great honor and I love what I do."
13 year old Charleena Martinez is also one of the dancers and admits, "Yeah I'm a little bit nervous but I'm excited too."
It's costing 15 thousand dollars for the dancers and chaperones to go to D.C. to perform. The Ballet Folklorico De La Raza has raised four thousand dollars and is accepting donations. If you'd like to help call Connie at 719-573-4826.
