CAÑON CITY, Colo. - Mother Nature put a no fly zone for hot air balloons in Cañon City.
The first Create Cañon City Balloon Classic started Saturday (05/24/14). Organizers said more than 1,000 people from all over the country attended.
But the wind forced the hot air balloons to be grounded both Saturday and Sunday morning.
Organizers are optimistic that they will still be able to hold the Balloon Glow at 8 p.m. Sunday.
Balloonist Gary Moore said safety always comes first.
"It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than to be in the air wishing you were on the ground," he said.
Rob Brown said since the Royal Gorge fire hurt the city financially, events like the balloon classic are important.
"Our goal is to bring an event during springtime to get this going and open the springtime with a bang," he said.
Colorado Balloon Classic President Patsy Buchwald said there are plans to have another balloon classic in Canon City next year.
As for the Colorado Springs Balloon Classic, Buchwald said there will be an event in the Springs on Labor Day, but beyond that she said that's still up in the air.
Parking and admission is free at the Create Cañon City Balloon Classic.
