Cause of death under investigation after body pulled from Arkansas River

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. - A kayaker died on the Arkansas River near Buena Vista Monday (7/28/14), but how he died is unclear.

The incident happened at around 12:08 p.m. in the Miracle Mile section of the river, which is about 7 miles north of Buena Vista.

According to witnesses, the victim was kayaking when his boat became high centered on a large rock.

The witnesses said the man stepped out of his kayak and was standing on the shoreline. They said they spotted him floating downriver a short time later. 

The man was pulled to shore approximately 200 yards downstream and emergency CPR was started immediately.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine how the man died.

The man's name has not been released.
