COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A Colorado Springs family is dealing with the heartache of losing their beloved dog.
Chico, their 4-year-old Chihuahua, was found shot to death on Saturday near their home in the 4600 block of Purcell Drive.
"I just want to know why," said George Devoer.
The Devoer's said they let him out as usual on Sat. morning but he didn't come back inside. When they went searching for him, they discovered him lying just outside their backyard.
"We had no idea what happened at first," said George Devoer. Then, he noticed a bullet wound he believes was from a pellet gun or .22 caliber.
"He has never left our yard the entire four years we had him ... he had to be coaxed out there," he speculated.
Devoer posted fliers around his neighborhood and is warning neighbors to keep a close watch on their pets. He worries the shooter could strike again.
"Everybody in neighborhood has two dogs and two kids it seems," said George.
The couple is hoping a neighbor or someone using the walking path near their home saw something and will report it.
They are offering a $1,000 reward for anything with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.
"I just can't believe someone in broad daylight did what they did ... I can't believe there isn't someone who saw something," said Diana Devoer.
Devoer said she came home with Chico after meeting him at a friends 50th birthday party. She said the dog has helped them both deal with their cancer treatments.
She said her grandchildren also developed a deep connection with him.
