Child safe after shots fired, brief standoff at home

SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo. - A child was rescued and a woman arrested after a shot was fired at a home in Security-Widefield Wednesday (12/18/13).

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says that at 10:08 a.m. it received a report of an argument between a 24-year-old man and his sister-in-law, Rachel Thompson, 26.

Deputies say a gun went off at one point during the argument, but no one was hit. The man ran out of the house and called 9-1-1. Thompson stayed inside the home with an 11-month-old child.

The SWAT team was called in and there was a brief standoff before Thompson gave herself up. The child was not hurt.

Thompson is facing charges for menacing, child abuse and reckless endangerment.

Widefield School District 3 says that nearby Sunrise Elementary was placed on secure perimeter as a precaution during the incident.
