Cold nights are costly for those who rely on propane

BLACK FOREST, Colo. - With temperatures plummeting and propane prices skyrocketing, staying warm is a challenge for those who use propane to heat their homes.

John Dahl, who lives in Black Forest, told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that he is counting down the days until Spring.  To use less propane, he's using foil insulation around his windows.  His trailer home sits on a bed of hay.

"At night it's not that bad, but in the morning when the windows are frozen over and the doors are frozen shut, it's like, 'What the heck?'" Dahl said.

The price for a gallon of propane in El Paso County is anywhere between $3.90 and $5.75 a gallon.  In September, it was less than $2 a gallon.

Dahl hopes the government will step in to help those in need. He says that many people in Black Forest, who have lost so much in last summer's fire, are now clinging to pride.

"Nobody wants to go to a shelter and tuck their tail in between their legs," Dahl said.  "Nobody out here wants pity. That's the main thing."

Supplies of propane were depleted by a late harvest that increased demand from farmers who needed to dry large amounts of grain before storage.
