County: Old Stage Road set to open in late September

Old Stage Road set to open in late September

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A record-setting flood from September forced Old Stage Road to shut down. El Paso County is working to have the popular road open by late September.

Rocks, fallen trees and other debris are still leftover on the popular outdoor spot.

"The flood washed out the road, also a lot of debris on the road and exposed quite a few culverts," El Paso County worker Michael Cartmell said.

The county brought out the heavy machinery to help repair the road.

"We are currently repairing a retaining wall, were replacing several pipe culverts and we are removing debris," Cartmell said.

Work didn't start until this week on Old Stage Road because the county had to wait to collect almost $600,000 to fix the popular road. The money came from the federal, state, and county governments.

"It's a long process, a lot of hoops to jump through and we have to go through the process to obtain grants before work can start," Cartmell said.

When the road closed it disappointed Rachel Leinweber.

"It was depressing, just because it was so close and you get attached to having places nearby to camp," she said.

Heather Duke said she has great memories driving on Old Stage Road.

"My family and I use to sightsee at Old Stage Road," she said.

Duke said when it opens again she hopes she can create more memories with her dogs.

The county said the only people who are allowed on Old Stage Road until it's fixed are business owners in the area and people who live there.
