Crews extinguish fire at vacant house again

House catches fire twice in 24 hours

House Catches Fire For 2nd Time in 24 Hours

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a house fire Tuesday afternoon on West Costilla Street.  The same structure caught fire Monday evening.

CSFD said the home in the 1300 block of West Costilla Street caught fire again just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.  Firefighters said the fire was small and was quickly doused after a neighbor reported seeing smoke.

Firefighters said the first fire at the home happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday.  After putting that one out, firefighters posted a crew to guard the house and watch for any new flames or smoke.

Tuesday's fire likely did not spark from the remnants of Monday's fire, CSFD said, but the cause of both fires remain under investigation.

CSFD said the house is vacant.  However, some neighbors said the previous tenants were recently evicted and the house is in foreclosure.  Those neighbors also said they saw or heard suspicious people around the house before each fire.

Firefighters said police planned to conduct extra patrols around the house overnight.
