PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. - Some southern Pueblo County neighbors have organized against a proposed shooting range in a popular recreation area.
The Greenhorn Valley Sportsmen's Club wants to lease 20 acres owned by the Colorado City Metro District. The club offers paying $1,200 annually for 30 years, to use the property for the range.
David Valdez of the CCMD said the club wants the property because it's the only available large parcel of land in the Colorado City area. The club also believes the area needs a convenient, safe place for people to fire their guns, he said.
However, opponents have formed the group Friends of Graneros Gorge. They are promoting an online petition to block the range. The parcel is part of the popular Graneros Gorge area known for its history, wildlife and popularity as a recreation spot.
A member of the group, Tom Olson, said a range would ruin the gorge's scenic beauty. He also said there's no guarantee that a range would control other shooting that already happens on the property.
The club and Colorado City began discussing the range idea more than a year ago. A public hearing previously was held, and the CCMD board will discuss the matter at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Craver Middle School.
