PUEBLO WEST, Colo. - Three convicted felons are expected in court this week.
The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office said Steven Wilson, 51, Shane Smith, 39, and Kimberlie Verigan, 35, all had prior felony convictions. They now face another felony charge for possessing weapons and drugs, which is illegal for convicted felons.
Pueblo County Sheriff's deputies raided a home Friday night and found drugs and more than a dozen loaded weapons they believe were being used for illegal activities.
Undersheriff J.R. Hall told KRDO NewsChannel 13 he doesn't have any information to indicate the suspects had plans to hurt anyone with the weapons. At least eight shotguns and rifles and five handguns were confiscated, among other weapons. All of them were loaded.
The six-month investigation progressed Friday night when deputies executed a search warrant at a home on the 1000 block of Linda Avenue.
"Individuals of this type will stay in their home for days," Hall said.
Wilson, Smith, and Verigan were arrested but only one of them was inside the home Friday night. Hall wouldn't say who it was but says deputies were waiting for one of them to leave the house so they wouldn't encounter all three together. Hall said deputies knew they'd find guns and meth in the house.
"In most cases if they can wait somebody out and kind of separate the group, that's highly effective, as was done in this case," Hall said. "Methamphetamines can cause individuals to be awake for several days and while they have the drug handy they tend to not come out of the residence."
Hall said deputies had been in the home before executing the search warrant, but since the investigation is ongoing he wouldn't say why.
"Whenever there's gun and or drugs for sale, it's likely that we will purchase those guns or drugs for sale," Hall said.
Deputies first learned about the suspects through an anonymous tip. Hall said it's another reminder that the public is often the most helpful in helping them solve crimes.
