COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A special group of volunteers are ready provide safe rides home for anyone who needs it this holiday season.
Designated Driver of Colorado Springs operates every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. It also plans to operate on New Years Eve.
The volunteers drive people home in their own vehicles. They do ask people to make a donation.
"My cousin was out walking her dog on a Sunday morning," said Nonie Rispin. That's when she said she was killed by a drunk driver.
Ever since, Rispin has devoted her time keeping drunk drivers off the roads. Unfortunately, financial problems forced them to shut down operations last Holiday season.
Rispin said they received about 3,100 calls for service during that time. She expects a lot this year as well.
It has 16 pickup locations. But if you plan ahead, you can purchase a voucher to be picked up at a different location.
This year, they are also offering private party service. Rispin said they've already had requests from several businesses to help take people home from office parties.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, over the 2011 Thanksgiving weekend, 36 people were arrested in Colorado Springs for DUI and four people died in alcohol related crashes.
