Do yourself a favor: Don't drive on I-25 through Denver this weekend

DENVER, Colo. - Carmageddon is making its way to the mile high city this weekend.

Interstate 25 will be closed in both directions between Sante Fe Dr. and 6th Ave. from 9 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday and then again from 9 p.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is closing the highway to work on the "Gap Lane Project." The project will add an extra lane to northbound I-25 by narrowing all of the existing lanes and shoulders.

The goal of the project is to alleviate rush hour congestion in the northbound lanes of I-25 through the stretch. CDOT says it's a temporary fix until funding can be found for a more permanent solution.

The north bridge of US 6 over I-25 will also be demolished during the project.
