Family of hit and run victim wants justice

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who seriously injured a man early Monday morning just after midnight.

The victim's family members tell KRDO NewsChannel 13 they're shocked that the driver didn't stop to help 27-year-old Chris Simmons.

"I thought it was unreal. I didn't think it was true," said Chad Simmons, Chris' brother.  "I just can't believe a human being can have no heart."

Police say Chris was riding a motorized scooter and was hit from behind by a car around 12:15 a.m. in the 1700 block of South Circle Drive. The suspect car left the scene after the crash with the scooter attached to the front of it. Police found the scooter on Monterey Road, west of Circle Drive, but were not able to find the suspect's car.

Chris was taken to the hospital to treat serious injuries, but is expected to survive.  As of Monday evening, he is out of the ICU.  The family says Chris suffered skull fractures, broken bones and road rash.  They say he will likely lose some hearing, but they are happy he's alive.

"What if my brother's leg had been caught between the scooter and the car and my brother was dragged with it?" said Chad.  "Maybe it would be a whole different story. Maybe we wouldn't be talking about a person being alive right now."

Police are searching for a white, two- or four-door car with a rear spoiler attached to the trunk. It should have moderate to severe damage to the front of the car.

Chad hopes the driver will turn himself or herself in to police.

"Be a man or woman," Chad said.  "Stand up. Turn yourself in because if this was your brother or sister and there was no justice for your family, how would you feel?"

If you have any information about the crash, you're asked to call CSPD at 719-444-7000.
