COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Four people are recovering after their house caught fire on Tuesday afternoon (12/24/13).
It happened around 12:15 p.m. at a home on Olympic and Monterey, near Circle Drive.
Neighbors say they heard a series of "pops and bangs followed by fire balls." It was those sights and sounds that drove them into action and they called 911 and then ran over and tried to help out as best they could.
Firefighters say it's amazing things didn't turn out worse since there were thirteen people living in the home at the time. As it is, despite flames several feet high, only four people were hurt; they were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Firefighters also managed to save a dog, which led neighbors to help out even more. Neighbor Adam Parrot says he and his son also have small dogs and sympathize with the family so they "brought them dog food, treats, soda, water, chips, and granola bars to help out." The Red Cross is also helping out, providing essentials to the family.
According to Fire Lieutenant John Aker, any house fire is unfortunate but one right before Christmas is especially hard.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
