Firefighter injured in Pueblo house blaze

Pueblo Firefighter Injured

PUEBLO, Colo. - A fire damaged a home and injured a firefighter late Thursday night.

The blaze occurred at a home on the 400 block of Broadway Avenue around 10 p.m.

The fire began in the basement of a multi-story home, according to Eric Knight, fire inspector with the Pueblo Fire Department.

Smoke billowed from outside the home throughout the neighborhood but vanished after about 20 minutes once the fire was extinguished.

Nobody was inside the home when the blaze ignited, Knight said.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

A firefighter was seen being taken away in an ambulance after battling the blaze.

According to the fire department, the firefighter is being held in the hospital for observation and is in stable condition.

Firefighters worked diligently to gain access to the home.

Witnesses who lived across the street said when the fire began, firefighters could be seen forcing the front door of the home open to gain access to the blaze.

Windows on the upper level of the home were broken so smoke could be vented from it.

The structure remained intact but damage was done to the inside.

Pueblo firefighter Chad Thomas battled the fire on Broadway.

He said accidents are going to happen when fighting a fire.

"Guys are running around the fire scene and trying to get things done in an efficient matter. Something like this is going to happen," he said.

Thomas said the Pueblo Fire Department is understaff and that could lead to more problems.

"Guys are wroking overtime to cover (fires). I mean guys are getting worn out and it's taking a toll on the job as a whole," he said.

Thomas said all he can do, until there are more firefighters, is work out, eat healthy, and prepare for the next fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
