Flood projects help business

Flood projects help business

CHIPITA PARK, Colo. - Flash floods damaged places near Fountain Creek, but not the Lone Duck Campground.

It escaped with barely a scratch because of flood projects from Waldo Canyon Recovery Groups.

The 50-year-old business sits between two major flood areas and took precautions.

"They cleared out the creek out, they put a gabion wall to prevent flooding from coming out of the other side where the Wellington Gulch is."

Teresa Springer works for the Coalition for the Upper South Platte.

She works on projects in Waldo Canyon's Burn Scar and Fountain Creek.

Springer believes they were a success since they withstood last night's flash floods,

"I am so happy after every flood we usually see devastation and this is one where we were able to go through beforehand start at the top work our way down what can we do at each spot and they all worked."

Springer feels they won the battle, but the war with mitigating floods is far from over.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says none of its projects faced any damage from the flood.

But Leon Kot says the work is far from over.

"They put in a lot of work here in many spots it blew out from last year's storm they're still tweaking a lot of the new work...it's a challenge and all we are trying to do it meet the challenge and deal with what mother nature is throwing at us."

Operations Director Jeff Ravage feels the work done around Fountain Creek prevented a catastrophe in Manitou Springs.

"The spreading out and reconcentrating of water moved through this corridor that's why you didn't get a wall of water hitting Manitou rapidly."

"Well they have been on our property throughout the year just to help and people come out from the community helping on a personal note the phone calls we get from the local community just offering to help."

Mack says debris traps behind her building will be designed so that it's pleasing to the eye.
