Flood-risk map and sandbag pickup locations

Areas prone to risk for years because of Waldo Canyon Fire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - With spring right around the corner, experts advise Colorado Springs residents in flood-risk areas to begin preparing. Many homes are at risk of flooding because of the Waldo Canyon Fire.

Experts said the soil in the burn area is hydrophobic, meaning it doesn't absorb water well. So when it rains, the water runs off. Getting even half inch of rain an hour could be a big problem.

"In the past, we could actually get a lot more rain, with the soil absorbing that and the trees maintaining a good hold of the structure," Colorado Springs Emergency Management Coordinator, Ken Hughlett said.

To help residents prepare, Emergency Management is giving away free sandbags. But officials urge them to take their own precautions. Residents can check this flood-risk map, and see in detail, how likely it is that their home is prone to flooding.

Hughlett said residents should also sign up for weather alerts, and have a plan in the case of flooding.

These are the locations where residents can pick up free sandbags. Emergency Management is only providing the bags - they don't come with sand.
