FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. - A Fort Carson soldier is behind bars, accused of sexually assaulting a child.
Staff Sargent Erik Simon Jeske, 40, is accused of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl in her Penrose home in March 2010. Jeske is also a resident of Penrose.
The Fremont County Sheriff's Office said it was more than a year later when the alleged victim told her grandmother what happened.
"Frequently the victim is scared to report it or tell anybody about it," said Cpt. Don Pinover. "And that appeared to be the case in this instance."
Pinover said Jeske was visiting the victim's stepfather the night the assault occurred. Jeske is also being charged with felony menacing for allegedly threatening the girl's 15-year-old step-brother with a knife in an unrelated altercation.
Jeske was questioned by investigators, but got deployed to Afghanistan before an arrest warrant was issued in September of 2012. He was arrested by Ft. Carson police on December 13th when he returned from Afghanistan.
Ft. Carson said Jeske is a health care specialist with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. He's a decorated staff sergeant who's served almost a decade in the military.
Jeske, who has no prior criminal history in Colorado, is being held in the Fremont County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
