Fort Carson soldiers involved in accidental shooting

Victim treated and released from hospital

LINCOLN COUNTY, Colo. - An accidental shooting on Sunday afternoon sent one person to the hospital in Lincoln County.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said that deputies responded to the shooting at 20402 County Road 2 around 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies were told that several people were cleaning guns and 21-year-old Zachary Clay accidentally shot 18-year-old Reid Potwin in the leg.  Clay said that he moved the slide of a .40 caliber pistol to clean it and the gun went off.

Witnesses on the scene confirmed Clay's story, deputies said.

Potwin was flown to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs and was treated and released with superficial injuries to his leg.

Both Clay and Potwin are stationed at Fort Carson.  The case will be reviewed for possible charges, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said no alcohol was involved in the incident.
