Ft Carson might be losing combat brigade

FORT CARSON, Colo. - Fort Carson could be losing one of its large combat units with about 3,800 soldiers.

Military officials said Tuesday Fort Carson's 3rd Brigade Combat Team is one of 12 brigades being cut at 12 installations in the U.S. and Europe.

Lt. Col. Armando Hernandez says if Congress approves the cut, a majority of those soldiers will be absorbed by other brigade combat teams on the post.

"It's about 115-150 soldiers that would be affected," Hernandez said.

In a news release, the Department of Defense confirmed Fort Carson is on the list of installations scheduled to lose a brigade combat team by the year 2017.  You can see the full list in the table below.

  • Fort Bliss, TX
  • Fort Bragg, NC
  • Fort Campbell, KY
  • Fort Carson, CO
  • Fort Drum, NY
  • Fort Hood, TX
  • Fort Knox, KY
  • Fort Riley, KS
  • Fort Stewart, GA
  • Joint Based Lewis-McChord, WA
  • Two BCTs, stationed at Baumholder and Grafenwoehr, Germany, will complete their inactivation in Fiscal Year 2013, leaving two BCTs in Europe to fulfill strategic commitments.

The DOD says it's necessary to reduce the size of the Army by 80,000 soldiers because of the Budget Control Act of 2011 and defense planning guidance issued in 2012.

The money-saving plan includes reducing the number of active brigade combat teams from 45 to 33.

Congressman Doug Lamborn said Tuesday the post will still grow by about 1,800 soldiers as part of an Army reorganization.

Lamborn, a Republican whose district includes much of Fort Carson, says about 3,000 of those soldiers will be absorbed by three remaining brigades as the Army makes them larger.

Fort Carson is also getting a new combat aviation brigade, which will further offset the loss of the 3rd Brigade.
Fort Carson would still have the three other combat brigades, an artillery brigade, a sustainment brigade and the combat aviation brigade.
