Fugitive arrested during burglary investigation

Fugitive identified as escapee from Colorado Department of Corrections

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The search for a burglary suspect leads to the arrest of a fugitive who had escaped from the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Police were investigating an overnight burglary in the 4800 block of Butterfield Dr. Saturday. The victim's truck, motorcycle and a large safe were stolen.

Saturday afternoon, police were called to the Motel 6 on N. Chestnut St. after the janitorial crew found a large safe in one of the rooms that had been forced open and destroyed. Police believed it was the same safe that had been stolen.

Police set up surveillance at the motel while waiting for the suspects to return. Police then saw a truck pull into the parking lot of the motel. It matched the description of the truck that was stolen in the burglary. They also saw someone riding a motorcycle that was believed to be the same one that was stolen.

When police approached the truck driver, the motorcycle rider fled the area. The driver of the truck did not comply and fought with officers. He was tased and taken into custody.

Andre Bethea, 23, was identified as an escapee from the Colorado Department of Corrections. He was taken into custody for the escape warrant, and faces a number of other felony charges.

The truck was confirmed as the stolen one, and was returned to its owner.
