Gang war eyed as cause of recent drive-by shootings

PUEBLO, Colo. - A fight between gangs is playing out on the streets of Pueblo. There have been five drive-by shootings in Pueblo since Friday. Police believe at least three of them are gang related.

"This weekend was very violent and we don't see that very often," said Capt. Kenny Rider.

There were two shootings on Friday in Pueblo's Bessemer neighborhood, on the south side. Two shootings took place on Saturday, but police aren't sure if those are gang related. Then on Sunday another shooting occurred, this time on the west side.

On Sunday night, a home on the 1300 block of Park Avenue was the target. A resident across the street heard the shooting and ducked.

"I just went to the floor. I just got down and went to the floor," Shirley Lucero said.

A 26-year-old woman was sitting inside the house, watching T.V., when she was shot in the arm. Two children were also home but were not hurt.

Rider said,"The individuals who were targeted, people might think that they're just targeting those individuals, but the problem is that there are bystanders."

On Friday night, a shooting on the south side of Pueblo, off of Northern Avenue, left 17 bullet holes on the side of a home. Rider told KRDO NewsChannel 13 the shooter used a rifle.

"These gang members have histories that go way far back," he said.

It's that history that has residents worried the violence may not be over.

"I didn't know where the gun shots were coming from," Lucero said. "I didn't even see nobody. I didn't see nobody running."

Rider said handguns were used in most of the shootings. Those who have information about the shootings are urged to call Pueblo CrimeStoppers at 542-STOP.
