Grass fire sparks near Colorado Springs Flea Market

Strong winds, lack of convenient water supply challenge firefighters

Grass Fire near Colorado Springs Flea Market

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Firefighters on Saturday contained a grass fire near the Colorado Springs Flea Market.

It was reported just before 3:30 p.m. behind the Flea Market, about a mile south of the intersection of Platte Avenue and Wooten Road.

Fortunately, the fire burned in an open area where no structures were in danger.  Although flames grew quite high at one point, firefighters from Colorado Springs, Black Forest and other areas had the situation under control in an hour.

Lt. Kriss Soppe of the Colorado Springs Fire Departmernt said the fire started in a pile of debris and that strong winds fanned the flames into surrounding dry grass.  The absence of a conveniently close fire hydrant also slowed efforts to control the blaze, he said, because water had to be transported to the scene.

Soppe said the fire's cause is unknown and remains under investigation.
