Hundreds spread message of equality, diversity at Colorado Springs PrideFest

Hundreds enjoy Colorado Springs PrideFest

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Hundreds of people,  young and old, took over the streets of Downtown Colorado Springs Sunday morning marching for equality.

Colorado Springs Pride Center board president, Jack Danielsen, said he's saddened by Friday's decision from the Colorado Supreme Court telling clerks in Denver and Adams counties to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. Danielsen believes it's time for the entire state to catch-up with a changing, more accepting society.

"Our attorney general is fighting equality at every turn," Danielsen said. "This decision from the court to say hold off is very disappointing. All we want is to celebrate our love like everyone else."

Last week, Danielsen and his partner of six years went to the El Paso County Clerk's office to get a marriage license. They were denied. They say they will not go to Pueblo County to get married because Pueblo is not home.

Raina Dixon and Amanda Mayo enjoyed PrideFest with their nieces. Mayo wants to marry her lover. Dixon argues a marriage license is nothing more than a piece of paper.

"Unfortunately there is always going to be somebody standing in our way," Mayo said. "We just have to deal with terms and eventually we'll have the same rights and when that day happens we'll fully go through with it."

"A person is going to be in love with a certain specific somebody for the rest of their lives," Dixon said. "Honestly, I feel having the right to get married is just having the right to get divorced."

Jack Danielsen desperately wants the right to marry his partner and believes one day soon marriage will be the law of the land for everyone.

"We're celebrating the fact that we know it won't be very long before the U.S. Supreme Court says you know what, you have to treat everyone equally," he said.

Champions of diversity and equal rights marched downtown carrying a message that stretches far beyond the parade route.
