Ice on 1-25 sends 9 cars off road within 5-mile stretch

MONUMENT, Colo. - Freezing rain coated a stretch of I-25 with a layer of ice Wednesday morning flipping vehicles and sending drivers into ditches.

Colorado State Patrol responded to nine accidents along the interstate between Baptist Road and County Line Road.  Three of the nine cars rolled over. No drivers were seriously injured in the accidents.

"We started seeing all these crashes everywhere and a lot of cars flipped over. A lot of tow trucks every where and police," said Cesar Nava.

Nava and his coworkers were headed to Denver when the ice caused their trailer to collide with another car. The accident left the trailer broken and Nava stuck on the side of the road for hours.

"We tried to stop and avoid a big accident.  It could have been worse," said Nava.

Freezing rain and slick conditions caught him off guard.

"It's scary out here [with] all these cars and all these accidents everywhere.  It didn't seem like it was that bad," said Nava.

The Colorado Department of Transportation sent crews to lay down de-icer and a sand/salt mix on the road. Crews also attended to overpasses, bridges and interstate ramps.

"We've had numerous accidents on the interstate in northern El Paso County mostly just because of road conditions," said Joshua Yoder with Colorado State patrol. "The temperature dropped up here and it's higher winds so the road freezes more quickly."

Truck driver Tim Gilley started his trip in southern Colorado. He stopped in Monument.

"It's spring time in the Rockies. It's to be expected," said Gilley.

He said road conditions never stop him.

"You grow up around this and you get used to it. It's just snow, that's all," said Gilley.

By noon, freezing rain turned into snow. The roads were slushy and wet, an improvement from the morning's icy conditions. Drivers were alerted to expect delays on their evening commute as snow is predicted to stick around.
