Lack of holiday giving feared after Waldo Canyon Fire donations

Donations were pouring into nonprofit organizations, like Care & Share Food Bank, during the Waldo Canyon Fire.

Now, the nonprofit is saying it is noticing a worrisome trend.

"We've heard a lot of people say, ‘Oh, I already gave during the fire,'" said Shannon Coker, community relations director for Care & Share Food Bank.

Coker said the organizations received 1.6 million pounds worth of donations during the two weeks of the Waldo Canyon Fire.  That is four times the amount typically received in one year.

"The community we live in is incredibly generous.  We've seen that time and time again," said Coker.

According to Care & Share Food Bank, the month of November is one of the busiest times of year for nonprofits.

"It's a time where our partner agencies are in need of turkeys and canned and boxed meals for the families who are in need of assistance.  So the next three weeks are incredibly pivotal for us," said Coker.

KRDO Newschannel 13 is teaming up with Care & Share Food Bank for the Harvest of Love Food Drive, which got under way in some Colorado Springs schools on Monday.  People can also donate at the KRDO Newschannel 13 Station, located at 399 S. 8th St., or at any of the Colorado Springs and Pueblo American Furniture Warehouses.

"Someone who's thinking, ‘Oh, yeah, I already gave.  I won't give again,' that means that somebody who is hungry and who needs assistance will probably go without," said Coker.

Coker said Care & Share Food Bank accepts both food and monetary donations, adding that $1 can supply eight meals.

While nervous about the potential lack of donations this year, Coker said she is optimistic and hopeful that the community will respond to the need.

"We just hope everyone thinks of their neighbors and the families in our back yard to help them and provide for them this holiday season," she said.
