Large hail hammers tiny town of Hoehne

HOEHNE, Colo. - The hail swept through like a hatchet.  Stripping trees down to sticks, crushing crops, smashing windows and roofs.

"It's amazing how much glass can come out of your windows when it's spread across the floor," Mike Powell said.

Powell and his wife weren't home when the storm hit Wednesday evening.  After a phone call from neighbors, they came home to 12 broken windows.

"There was a lot of damage, a lot of broken glass and a lot of water inside the house," Powell said.

Neighbors who were home said they had to hunker down as the hail blew horizontally into their homes.

"Keep your family safe is all I had time to think," said Ernie Trujillo.  "I looked out and I was like holy cow, this isn't going to be good and told everybody to get to the middle of the house and we just kind of hunkered down and weathered out the beating."

Las Animas County Sheriff James Casias says one driver was injured by the hail breaking his cars windows.  The was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released for his injuries.

Sheriff Casias says the county is looking into whether or not there is enough damage to apply for a natural disaster declaration to free up assistance from the State.

Officials say there were no tornadoes associated with the storm, but a microburst may have contributed to some of the damage.
