MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. - The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said a man who exchanged gunfire with a Manitou Springs police officer moments before being shot early Saturday morning was wanted for escape.
It happened around 2 a.m. Saturday in front of La Fon Motel on 123 Manitou Ave.
Manitou Springs police officers responded to a Crime Stoppers tip about 37-year-old Christopher Clemens, who was wanted for escape by the Colorado Department of Corrections.
When officers found Clemens, he fired at one of the officers, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. An officer returned fire, striking Clemens, an EPSO spokesman said.
Clemens was taken to a hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
The officers were not hurt in the shooting.
According to the Colorado Department of Corrections, Clemens walked off from the Community Corrections of El Paso County on March 27 and had not been seen since. He had been put on general parole in July 2012. The DOC says the most common reason for going back to Community Corrections is for a parole violation.
A background check of Clemens shows his criminal record dates to 1997 and includes convictions of theft, forgery, assault, escape, motor vehicle theft and drug-related crimes.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office are investigating the shooting.
