Man who police say broke into a business lied about identity

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The man who police said broke into a Colorado Springs business and hid in the attic for hours is also suspected of lying about his identity.

Tyler Konecne, 43, was arrested Monday, after a standoff that lasted about five hours. They said he broke into a building at the Astrozon Plaza through an air duct. He was inside for hours, as officers, including members of a SWAT team tried to get him to come out. A police dog found Konecne, and officers were able to arrest him. Shortly after, he was identified as James McDow, 31.

"The individual that was taken into custody had a driver's license in his possession with the name James McDow. The picture on the driver's license closely resembled the individual taken into custody, and he provided that information to the police department upon being interviewed," Colorado Springs Police Department Lt. Catherine Buckley said.

The real McDow works in a Colorado Springs auto shop. A friend told him had heard his name and age on the news, in connection with Monday's standoff.

"I was kind of shocked, I guess," he said. "I didn't know what to do actually."

Once Konecne was taken into the Criminal Justice Center and his fingerprints were taken, police discovered and released his real name.

McDow said he has never met Konecne. But he lost his wallet in April, and thinks that's how his identity was stolen.

Konecne faces charges of burglary in the second degree, attempt to influence a public servant, possession of burglary tools, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, criminal possession of an identification document and obstructing a police officer. He is due back in court August 20.
