MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. - The Governor's Recovery Office hosted a meeting Monday night with the City of Manitou Springs and its residents to discuss flood projects that still need funding.
The state is already in the process of reviewing applications for $62.8 million for flood projects. Colorado has been allocated another $199 million to assist areas that need funding after last fall's flooding.
Monday night's meeting will provide insight into what work the city and community feels still needs to be done to recover from flash flooding last July and August.
Stephen Smith owns a rental home on Narrows Road. He said there is still a lot of work to be done in the neighborhood.
"It's not a neighborhood. It used to be a nice little owners, gardens flowers, people living here," said Smith.
It took the City of Manitou Springs one year to remove two homes that were unlivable after last summer's flooding.
"Property values went down 20 or 30 percent. No one is renting houses. One, two, three... five houses empty," said Smith.
He said this neighborhood needs help from the City of Manitou Springs and the state.
"They are trying hard. Try harder, spend just a little bit of money down here and it's not going to be a whole lot, and it will be a nice little street again," said Smith.
Flood Recovery manager Roger Miller said there are plans to fix the culvert running along Narrows Road. Miller said the project will help clean up the neighborhood. He said it took time to remove the two damaged homes on the street because of concerns about asbestos.
"It's a long process, it's not something we do over night. You have to think of the near term as well as the future," said Roger Miller.
The Governor's Recovery Office is encouraging the public to share their thoughts on work that still needs to be done. The public can offer their comments until Aug. 31.
