Member of accused bank robber trio sentenced to prison

Braden Butson sentenced to 6 years in prison

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A member of the father and sons trio accused of robbing multiple banks last summer was sentenced to six years in prison Tuesday.

Braden Butson, 23, had pleaded guilty to two counts of felony robbery. He was sentenced to six years in prison and three years parole for each count. The sentences are to be served concurrently, at the same time. And he will get credit for the 139 days he has already spent behind bars.

During sentencing, Braden's public defender presented a letter from Braden's grandparents. The lawyer told the judge the robberies were out of character for Braden. He said Braden was influenced by drugs and other people, and that he thought Braden would be successful and a better man in the future.

Braden's mom, Carolyn Butson, also spoke in court. She said she was grateful Braden is where he is and not dead, as he could've been. She told the judge he is a good kid, smart and respectful. She said she was proud of him for taking responsibility for his actions, for not blaming others and for wanting to be a role model for his younger brothers. She said she has never been more proud of him.

During sentencing, Carolyn referenced her ex-husband, Brock Butson. She said she couldn't figure out how a father who says he loves his sons would lead them down this path.

Brock, Braden and younger brother Nicholas Butson are accused of robbing multiple banks last summer. Nicholas pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in prison. Brock pleaded not guilty.
