Morse backer launches voter fraud complaint

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A Colorado Springs woman has asked the district attorney's office to launch a voter fraud investigation after a Boulder man cast a blank ballot in the Senate District 11 recall election under a new state law.

Christy Le Lait is with the group A Whole Lot of People for John Morse. Le Lait has filed a complaint with 4th Judicial District Attorney Dan May asking him to launch an investigation into the vote.

John Caldara, president of the Denver based Independence Institute, cast his vote after changing his voter registration on Saturday from Boulder County to El Paso County.

Caldera was able to quickly change his registration under the law by renting a room in the home of a Colorado Springs man. He says he did it to shed light on the law which he says is flawed, and makes it too easy to shift voter registrations from district to district.

"This appears to be a flagrant attack on our election system," says Le Lait. "Jon Caldara's childish stunt, meant to prove a misguided point, has ultimately undermined the public's faith in our democracy. It was a shameful act, and it was a crime."

Le Lait says she filed the complaint on election day.  She also worries that Caldara encouraged others to claim a change of residence so they could vote in the historic election.

El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Wayne Williams told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that there were 268 new registrants in Senate District 11 for the recall election.  Williams said that most are likely legitimate, but they would be investigating each case.

Even if fraudulent votes are found, the outcome of the election will not change, Williams said.  Le Lait said she realizes that; but still wants charges to be filed.

District Attorney Dan May's office told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that May had not received the complaint yet.  Once he does, he will review it and decide how to proceed.
