Mother of Police Shooting Victim Speaks Out

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The mother of Craig Bondo, the man shot to death Tuesday by Woodland Park police, spoke publicly for the first time since the incident.

Yvette Robbins, 36, spoke exclusively on Thursday with KRDO NewsChannel 13 from her home in Colorado Springs.

Robbins said based on two phone conversations she had with Bondo just before he died, she doubts the account by authorities that he was in a stolen car, tried to flee when he was pulled over, and struck an officer with the car.  Authorities said that prompted the shooting.

"I can't think of any reason (why) his death was justified," said Robbins.  "He told me he was being pulled over.  Talked to him again, he said he was fine.  He said he was getting a citation, asked me to come get him."

Robbins said she saw an ambulance traveling in the opposite direction on her way to Woodland Park, but wasn't aware the shooting had happened.  She said she was unable to find Bondo because he wasn't answering his phone and authorities had the area sealed off.

When she learned of the shooting, Robbins said she returned to Colorado Springs.

"I started calling around area hospitals to make sure it wasn't him," she said.  "I never got a confirmation until I got down here and located him at Penrose Hospital."

Robbins said Bondo, 20, was shot twice in the heart and once in the arm, and that authorities haven't allowed her to touch his body because authorities still consider it evidence.  She said she's also trying to raise money for his funeral.

"I want my son to have an appropriate funeral and be sent out with the respect that he deserves," she said.

Bondo leaves a son, Adrian, who will be 2 years old in March.  Robbins said Adrian lives with his mother.  Bondo was a concrete worker, Robbins said, but dreamed of opening a tattoo parlor.

"I hope that one day, I'll know truly what happened," she said.
