No response from sheriff's office

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A day later and no answer to a request for more copies of checks from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

The questions stem from allegations of a mystery fund: an account the Sheriff's Office says is legitimate.

KRDO has been trying to answers and requested recent records that the Sheriff's Office said would be made available.

NewsChannel 13 also asked for more check copies involving that account, which by the sheriff's office account was worth at least $600,000 last fall. It differs from the $50,000 it reported last week.

A public relations firm, not associated with the Sheriff's Office says when a company is faced with allegations, it's always good to address those concerns early.

"It's really important for any organization to provide timely and accurate information as fast as possible. Bad news doesn't get better with time so it's really important to come out early and often with your communication," said Amy Sufack, president of Red Energy Public Relations.

Sheriff Terry Maketa did apologize to his staff in a video obtained by the news media.  But so far, not a word to the public that elected him.

Sufack is only speaking about general strategy, but she is not a fan of staying quiet.

"I do think many organizations have a great responsibility because they need to be good stewards of the taxpayers' dollars, so there is an amount of transparency there for what they signed up to do," Sufack said.

The sheriff does have a policy like that in the procedure manual, approved by Maketa himself.

It states it is the policy of the Sheriff's Office to inform the community, through the news media, of events that involve the Sheriff's Office and its members.

In fact, it states media requests should be responded to within an hour and a cooperative climate in which the media may obtain information of public interest shall be maintained.
