Out-of-staters: where can you smoke pot?

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. - Business is booming in the Pueblo area since retail pot shops opened on New Year's Day.

Many people out-of-state are hitting the road to buy marijuana in Pueblo County. The question is where are non-Coloradans smoking pot?

Hotels like the Microtel Inn & Suites Pueblo have seen an increase in customers, especially people not from Colorado. You can only smoke pot on private property. Surprisingly,  the Microtel Inn & Suite Pueblo allows pot smokers to light up.

"A marijuana smoking guest is great for business," said Microtel Inn & Suite Pueblo Assistant General Manager Jason Lucero.

Lucero says the hotel has seen a slight jump in guests coming strictly for marijuana tourism. It's one of the only spots that allows marijuana smoking inside the smoking rooms.

"I though it was awesome. I didn't know they'd let me do that," said hotel guest Cy Loose.

"When a guest comes to the hotel, they pay among other taxes the lodging tax. Lodging tax is basically housing and you are more than welcome to smoke in the housing," said Lucero.

Next door, the Hampton Inn & Suites says smoking pot is not okay. A manager told Newschannel 13 they've had problems with guests smoking since New Year's Day.

In Pueblo West, next door to Marisol Therapeutics, a restaurant is seeing green.

"The guy from Texas ate half his sandwich and he asked for a box to go. I asked him, 'Is everything okay?' and he said, 'Yeah, this is so good. I just want to get high and then eat it," said Do Drop Inn Restaurant Assistant Manager Oliver Sampler.

The problem is once you cross Colorado state lines, you can't smoke pot. If you stay in Colorado, it's legal to smoke on private property.

"Private property then. Find me the first private property there is," said pot smoker Brandon Brown.

The two gas stations near 'The Greener Side' pot shop said they've been busy since marijuana stores opened.
