Passenger Dead After Rollover Into Reservoir

CONEJOS COUNTY, Colo. - One person is dead and another is seriously injured after a car rollover in Platoro Reservoir.

The crash happened June 27 at 9:00 pm when a vehicle rolled off of Forest Service Road 250 into Platoro Reservoir. This is about 20 miles northwest of the Orca community in southern Conejos County.

Investigators say a driver in a 2009 Ford F-250 pickup lost control while driving eastbound on the service road. Laylan Stapp, 37, went off the right side of the road and rolled multiple times down a 250 foot embankment. The truck was then submerged under water after it stopped in the reservoir.

Damian Guevera, a 17-year-old male passenger from Abilene, Texas, was able to escape the vehicle and was rescued by campers in the area. He was transported to a Denver-area hospital for serious injuries.

Rescuers took awhile to reach the scene due to the extreme terrain. Stapp was found dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
