PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. - A red flag warning in Pueblo County and an illegal burn spells trouble.
It began Monday afternoon in eastern Pueblo County as a controlled burn. A farmer was burning yard debris and didn't realize Pueblo County was under a red flag warning because of the fire danger. The burn got out of control and spread across 15 acres. During the peak of the fire, six homes were threatened. No one was asked to evacuate. The fire is now 80 percent contained.
Most of the firefighters who were at the scene have left. The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office says it's not safe for firefighters to be fighting it at night. Overnight, four to five crews will be there monitoring any hotspots. The wind dying down overnight is expected to help firefighters start up again Tuesday.
The sheriff's office says the farmer could face charges for arson. So far, no property has been damaged.
Firefighters say they plan to be out there through at least Wednesday morning to ensure all hot spots are put out.
