Police offer free gun locks in wake of accidental shooting of 3-year-old

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Pueblo Police Department says free gun locks are available at the Municipal Justice Center downtown.

The locks are being offered in conjunction with Project Child Safe and will be available until supplies run out.

The Pueblo community is still reeling after a three year old girl was shot in the backyard of a home in the 3200 block of Colfax Ave.

Police say a nine year old managed to get his hands on a gun inside the home and bring it into the backyard. A five year old then got hold of the gun and accidentally shot the three year old girl. She is in critical condition at a Colorado Springs hospital. You can read more about the investigation here.

In addition to the free gun locks, Pueblo Police are offering the following gun safety tips for homes with children:

  • Explain pretend versus real life - Do not assume that your child knows the difference between being "killed" on TV or in a video game and the reality of gun violence.
  • Be responsible gun owners/parents - Use safes, gun locks, etc. in a home where guns are kept. The degree of safety a child has rests squarely on the parents and gun owner.
  • Talk to your Child about gun safety - remind them that if they see a gun they need to:
    Don't Touch!
    Leave the Area!
    Tell an Adult!

The Pueblo Municipal Justice Center is located at 200 S. Main Street.

Police say they provide free gun locks at a number of functions throughout the year.
