Police partner with CDOT to lower traffic fatalities

There have been an alarming number of traffic fatalities in Pueblo over the past year.

Since Oct. 2011, there have been 16 fatality accidents in the city, according to police.

Residential streets: 4 deadly accidents

Highways: 5 deadly accidents

Major Thoroughfares: 7 deadly accidents

While speed has been a factor in only 25% of these accidents, the department believes increased speed and traffic enforcement will cause drivers to be more cautious.

The police department received a grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation's office Transportation Safety which will provide funding for speed detection equipment.

The $15,000 grant will all the police department to purchase 6 new laser speed detectors, replace older equipment and allow more officers access to equipment.
