Police Shoot and Kill Fugitive

SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo. - A wanted fugitive was killed in an officer-involved shooting Friday afternoon.

Colorado Springs police were following a car on U.S. 85/87 around noon.  Police were watching the driver but were not in pursuit according to investigators.  The car crossed into Security-Widefield and El Paso County sheriff's deputies arrived to assist CSPD officers.

"Once in the area of the 7-Eleven, and as officers attempted to contain the suspect, he used his vehicle to ram police vehicles," said Lt. Jeff Kramer of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

CSPD opened fire on the suspect, officials said.  Authorities said the suspect was armed but it is unclear if he fired at any officers. Kramer said the suspect died of his injuries.  He has yet to be identified publicly.

"This was an investigation concerning a fugitive with multiple felony warrants," said Kramer.

Fontaine Boulevard reopened a short time after the shooting. Widefield Avenue remained closed until around 6:30 p.m. as detectives and forensic investigators continued their work.

Watson Junior High School and Talbott Elementary School were on a secured perimeter status as a precaution during the confrontation but no problems were reported.
