Police use bean bag fire, pepper spray to get man down off of roof

PUEBLO, Colo. - Police say a man who was talking to himself was shot with bean bags and pepper sprayed after refusing to come down from the roof of a home.

The incident happened during the early morning hours of Friday, November 15, 2013 at a home in the 1300 block of Stone Avenue.

Officers say Lawrence Gallardo, 37, made threats both verbally and by implying that he was going to throw the weapons at the officers who surrounded the home.

Police say that at one point during the negotiations, Gallardo threw the shovel at a group of officers and the SWAT team was called.

Officers continued to try to talk Gallardo off of the roof with no results, according to police. They then tried firing non-lethal bean bag rounds at Gallardo in an effort to convince him to come down. The bean bags caused Gallardo to drop his weapon, but he still refused to come down, so officers say they used pepper spray to calm him down.

After more negotiations and smoking a cigarette provided by officers Gallardo jumped down from the roof and was arrested.

Gallardo was booked on a no bond warrant for unlawful sexual contact, first degree burglary, domestic violence and a restraining order violation.
