COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado Department of Corrections says they are having troubles with ankle monitoring bracelets malfunctioning.
A spokesperson responded back with a phone call Wednesday after information regarding a parolee and his issues with his monitoring bracelet was requested Sunday.
In the phone call the spokesperson indicated that they are having issues with a private contractor putting on the bracelets correctly…also that the accuracy rate is not what they are hoping for. The DOC says they are working with the contractor to fix the problems.
The issue came to the attention of KRDO Newschannel 13 when a parolee named Justin showed us his malfunctioning bracelet. Justin says he has had problems with it numerous times.
"It's fully charged, I take it off then 5 minutes later, it says the battery needs charged," Justin said.
Ironically, Justin is on parole for escaping. Six years ago he cut his ankle monitor and ran to California.
He says when the bracelet is working; it's accurate within just a few feet to his location.
"I don't know why I am on this particular monitor. I think it's because of the threats to Government officials," Justin said.
KRDO is still waiting to learn the extent of the problem and what is being done to fix it. We are scheduled to interview a parole supervisor on Thursday.
